UNHCR and Better Shelter
Together with UNHCR, Better Shelter implemented 480 units in the recently opened Nyankanda refugee settlement in Burundi. The shelters will be used by refugees from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), placed in 47 of the settlement’s quartiers, which all are made out of 10 family plots.
According to UNHCR, there were over 800,000 refugees and asylum-seekers from the DRC by the end of 2018, 75,297 of whom were hosted in Burundi. These people are fleeing persecution from armed groups in the eastern region of DRC and are searching for safety in neighboring countries such as Burundi, Tanzania and Uganda.
