UNHCR and Better Shelter
Better Shelter and UNHCR Mozambique implemented 48 units in Maratane refugee settlement in Nampula, in the Northern part of the country. The shelters are currently being used for 3 different purposes:
– To care for victims of sexual and gender-based violence
– To serve as family shelters in transit shelters
– To serve as a Community Center
20 refugees from DRC, Burundi and Rwanda participated in the training session held by Better Shelter and UNHCR.
According to UNHCR, 78% of the refugees hosted in Mozambique are from DRC, most of them have fled from the Eastern region of the country which is suffering from a recent surge in violence against civilians. So far, the conflicts in the Great Lake area, as well as the deteriorating humanitarian situation, have displaced over 7.5 million people.
