The Bahamas
The situation
Natural disaster
An archipelago of nearly 700 coral islands in the Caribbean, the Bahamas has long been a place for leisure and recreation, hosting a strong tourism and hospitality sector for guests from its larger North American neighbours. However, its geographic location along the Atlantic hurricane belt makes it vulnerable to seasonal hurricanes, storms and flooding.
The intensification of natural hazards and frequency of disaster occurrences has slowed recovery efforts and caused widespread internal displacement in recent years, as more durable solutions are yet to be determined.
