UNHCR and Better Shelter
By February 2019, Zambia hosted over 78,000 refugees, most of them arriving from DRC after fleeing persistent violence and armed conflicts in their home country.
The Mantapala refugee settlement is home to about 14,000 refugees from DRC, a place that is shared with the local community. In 2018, about 100 Congolese refugees arrived every day to the settlement, after having been resettled from transit camps closer to the border.
Some of the Better Shelter units are being used as reception centers and other communal infrastructures such as security point and offices. The other units will be used as temporary shelters for the refugees hosted in Mantapala.
