Serbia
The situation
Reception capacity
Landlocked within the southeast of Europe, Serbia was significantly impacted by the influx of refugees arriving from Syria in 2015. Largely a transit route, about 1.5 million refugees passed through Serbia’s position in the Balkan route since 2015.
There are recorded over 5,000 refugees under various forms of legal protection in Serbia, mostly originating from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Syria, most of whom are accommodated in government-operated transit and protection centres.
