Access to primary healthcare in remote and mountainous regions was critically disrupted after the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in Morocco in September 2023. Health facilities across El-Haouz, Chichaoua, and Taroudant provinces were either severely damaged or rendered inaccessible, leaving thousands at risk.
As part of the integrated humanitarian response, Better Shelter supported the Moroccan Red Crescent and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). Seven shelters were installed in support of the Ministry of Health, primarily serving as temporary health centres, including a maternity centre in Talat N’Yakoub, El-Haouz Province.
Each shelter was adapted to meet healthcare needs and equipped with wooden flooring for improved hygiene and insulation; additional doors and enhanced ventilation to ensure indoor air quality, and electrical wiring to power essential medical equipment and lighting
Installations were carried out with local authorities and medical personnel to ensure safety and functionality.
Through this intervention, Better Shelter supported access to medical services for an estimated 1,128 people. The shelters enabled local health workers to resume vital services, including maternal care, general consultations, and basic treatment delivery, when brick-and-mortar clinics remained under reconstruction.
