Legal status
Better Shelter is a Swedish non-profit creating safer, more dignified living conditions for displaced people worldwide.
Better Shelter RHU AB is wholly owned by the Better Shelter Foundation in Sweden, which supports Better Shelter’s work by investing in initiatives that develop better housing and promote sustainable development. To achieve its goals, Better Shelter designs and distributes products, services and knowledge to address the needs and circumstances of displaced and vulnerable communities. Its work is guided by three core principles:
- understanding and responding to the needs and financial realities of the people it serves;
- collaborating with partners across sectors, including companies, NGOs, government agencies and universities;
- designing scalable solutions that can make a real difference in people’s lives.
All of the Foundation’s resources are reinvested in efforts that support this mission, whether through Better Shelter or other organisations working toward the same goals.
Ownership and governance structure
Better Shelter is governed by a board of directors and operates independently. Our ownership and governance structure ensures accountability, transparency, and long-term sustainability.

Management
Better Shelter was co-founded by Johan Karlsson, who continues to serve as Managing Director, together with a leadership team that oversees daily operations and partnerships.
Funding model
We are funded through grants, donations, and partnerships with humanitarian organisations and corporates and foundations. This model allows us to scale our impact while remaining financially sustainable.
Annual reports & financial transparency
We publish annual reviews, reports and financial statements to demonstrate how resources are used to maximise impact.
Partnerships & affiliations
We work closely with donors, humanitarian organisations, NGOs, and foundations to deliver shelters worldwide. Key partners include UNHCR, IKEA Foundation and H&M Foundation.
Policies & compliance
Better Shelter upholds strong policies on privacy, safeguarding, and ethical framework.
