Better Shelter is a Swedish non-profit foundation. We have no owners, no shareholders, and we never distribute profits. Every euro we receive is reinvested into our mission: creating safe, dignified shelter for people forced to flee.
The foundation donates shelters to UN agencies and NGOs. It also owns a social enterprise, Better Shelter RHU AB, which sells shelters to the same organisations.
This structure makes us flexible. We can combine donations with cost-recovery sales to reach more people, faster. And no matter how the money comes in, through sales or grants, it always goes back into the mission.
We are governed under Swedish foundation law and overseen by an independent board of directors, which ensures we stay true to our purpose.

Better Shelter is governed by a board of directors and operates independently. Our ownership and governance structure ensures accountability, transparency, and long-term sustainability. Our board oversees strategy and governance, ensuring that Better Shelter remains mission-driven and transparent.
Better Shelter was co-founded by Johan Karlsson, who continues to serve as Managing Director, together with a leadership team that oversees daily operations and partnerships.
We are funded through grants, donations, and partnerships with humanitarian organisations and corporates and foundations. This model allows us to scale our impact while remaining financially sustainable.
We publish annual reviews, reports and financial statements to demonstrate how resources are used to maximise impact.
We work closely with donors, humanitarian organisations, NGOs, and foundations to deliver shelters worldwide. Key partners include UNHCR, IKEA Foundation and H&M Foundation.
Better Shelter upholds strong policies on privacy, safeguarding, and ethical framework.
