For over 3 years, the migration situation has put pressure on the sheltering capacities of hosting countries along the Mediterranean. The situation led local authorities in Cyprus to appeal for assistance to extend its temporary shelter facilities.

IKEA and the Polish Center for International Aid (PCPM) provided 96 Better Shelter Relief Housing Units (RHUs) to the Cypriot Ministry of Interior (MoI) in support of the government’s operations to process incoming migrants and refugees. In June 2021, the Polish Ambassador to Cyprus, Irena Riknerovic handed over the RHUs to meet the “grim needs of the new reception centre for international protection applicants”. Cypriot Minister of Interior, Nicos Nuris, spoke of “the true meaning of solidarity practised beyond words.”
