In September 2021, mainstream media, UN agencies and humanitarian organisations reported on the increased arrival of refugees, migrants and asylum seekers on Italian maritime borders.

In response to this influx of people, UNHCR implemented 81 Relief Housing Unit (RHUs) with the support of local implementing partners throughout Italy. The RHUs will be used as part of the country and EU’s joint response in increasing reception capacity, such building temporary accommodation, community centres, reception units and administration offices.
