Relief Housing Unit (RHU) v1.3

A resistant shelter that arrives with all parts in a flatpack and is easy to assemble for immediate safety and dignity in emergency response.

The RHU v1.3 builds on what worked well in previous versions. Shaped by feedback from our humanitarian partners and the experiences of communities in the field, it improves key areas for both those who deliver the shelter and those who live in it.

What’s new in RHU v1.3

Cooler inside

New reflective white panels reduce indoor temperatures by approximately –5°C compared with the previous version of the RHU, improving comfort in hot climates.

More privacy

Improved panel opacity reduces visibility from outside at night, giving families more privacy and dignity.

Lower impact materials

The latest RHU introduces:

  • polypropylene mono-material panels for easier recycling
  • higher recycled content across multiple components
  • bromine-free flame retardant
  • reduced single-use plastic packaging

Approximately 88% of the shelter’s weight can be directly recycled in appropriate recycling facilities.

All in a box

The RHU is the last safety net when nothing else works. Residents can move into a dignified shelter from start.

Modular

Multi-sectoral use in different contexts and climates. Can be upgraded overtime to prolong lifespan.

Dignified, safe, temporary

While temporary, the RHU offers conflict and disaster affected families a higher level of safety, protection and dignity.

Designed for Sustainability

Supporting sustainable living conditions through improved privacy and indoor temperatures, while reducing environmental impact and CO2eq footprint.
