Schools after the Morocco Earthquake

In 2023, a powerful earthquake struck Morocco, affecting thousands of people and badly damaging schools and classrooms across the region. To meet the urgent need for safe places to learn, Better Shelter worked with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Moroccan Red Crescent to help children return to school. This response was an important part of helping communities recover and rebuild.

Better Shelter provided shelters adapted to serve as temporary classrooms and learning spaces. These simple, sturdy structures gave children a safe and stable place to continue their education, spend time with friends, and regain a sense of normal life during a difficult time.

With coordination from the Moroccan Department of Education, 450 shelters were set up and used as classrooms in 150 villages. This effort supported more than 6,000 people, including students, teachers, and school staff. By helping education continue, the project protected children’s learning and supported their emotional well-being during a period of great stress.

This joint effort shows how innovation and partnership can bring hope, safety, and a sense of purpose to communities after disaster.
