Session on humanitarian shelters for MCH Master’s students

On September 2nd, our colleague Miguel, from the support team, together with Professor Elena Giral, conducted an insightful session on our shelter’s role in emergency responses for students at MCH Master. This collaborative postgraduate program is for qualified architects and is offered by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and ETH Zürich. It emphasizes housing, urban, and energy studies, combining practical design synthesis with interdisciplinary approaches and theoretical considerations of living spaces and housing.

The presentation included a few humanitarian missions where our shelters were used:

– Robert (66), a participant in the program for people experiencing homelessness run by the Other Ones Foundation in Austin, Texas, USA.

– Jyotsana (60), a displaced woman by landslides in Kalaln, Assam, India. She was assisted by Seeds in transitioning from an emergency shelter to a durable home made of local materials.

– Francisco, whose house collapsed twice last year due to storms in El Chopá (Sucre), Colombia, is part of the housing program of the Corporación el Minuto de Dios with the support of Accenture.

The session demonstrated how these accommodation programs have improved people’s medical and mental health, as well as their economic situation, by providing a reliable and durable solution.

A few days following the workshop, MCH students gained practical experience by assembling two RHUs at ETSAM (Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid) to better understand the implications of building emergency shelters. Their work will be displayed until September 19th.
