How can design help people displaced by war, climate disasters, and conflict? That question will take centre stage at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts (VCUarts Qatar) on April 14, as designers, humanitarian experts, and academics gather for a public lecture and panel discussion exploring the role of design in humanitarian crisis response.
The event, “Design for Humanitarian Crisis Response,” is a collaboration between VCUarts Qatar, Anthro-Tech Ateliers, and the Embassy of Sweden to the State of Qatar.
Johan Karlsson, managing director of Better Shelter, will deliver the keynote lecture. Drawing on over a decade of experience developing shelter solutions for displaced populations, Karlsson will share lessons from designing for some of the world’s most vulnerable communities.
The panel discussion that follows will bring together Karlsson and Dr. Alkindi Aljawabra, Director at Qatar Museums, in a conversation with Dr. Johan Granberg, Head of the Department of Interior Design at VCUarts Qatar.
The event is free and open to the public.
