Some 1,400 people are sheltering here having fled an attack on the village of Yirgou in January 2019. ; Violence in Burkina Faso has forced almost 150,000 people to flee their homes in the past year. The regions worst affected include Sahel and Centre-Nord. Increasing hostilities involving armed groups across the wider Sahel region of Africa, including in neighbouring Mali, has created insecurity that has spilled over into Burkina Faso. The crisis has left people reliant on others in the community for support and many people in vulnerable situations are unable to support their family’s basic needs. Burkina Faso is hosting some 25,000 registered Malian refugees who fled the country’s deteriorating security situation which began in 2012 when jihadist militias began a campaign of violence.

Burkina Faso is currently experiencing multiple crises, from political instability and violence perpetrated by armed groups, to food insecurity and environmental issues with severe droughts and floods. Almost 150,000 citizens of Burkina Faso have been forced to flee their homes in the past year.
As part of its operations in the country, UNHCR implemented 1,494 Relief Housing Units (RHUs) to shelter 1,394 internally displaced people (IDP) and 100 refugee families in the Central-North and Sahel regions of Burkina Faso.
