The world’s most severe refugee situation

Abdallah Yaya Souleyman, a Sudanese refugee living in Chad, in front of his refugee housing unit. ; More than 400,000 people, mainly women and children, have fled Sudan for Chad in just five months, almost doubling the number of Sudanese refugees hosted by the country. Marked by the trauma of their perilous journeys, many refugees arrive in desperate conditions, particularly in the border town of Adre, which hosts more than 150,000 refugees in a spontaneous site, while more than 100,000 others have been transferred from Adre to three newly built refugee camps. Since the start of the influx, UNHCR and its partners have transferred around half of the newly arrived refugees to safe and suitable accommodation sites. However, almost 170,000 people in Adre and other border areas, as well as new arrivals every day, are still waiting to be urgently rehoused, depending on available resources. More than 5.2 million people have been displaced by the Sudanese conflict, including more than 400,000 refugees in Chad - the largest host country - but so far only $207.3 million has been received over a total of $1 billion for the regional response to refugee needs.

Since April 2023, Chad has been experiencing its worst refugee crisis. Over 720,000 Sudanese refugees and 220,000 Chadian returnees have arrived, most of them women and children—about 88%. Many have endured horrific experiences, including violence, hunger, and the loss of everything they own.

To support this, we partnered with UNHCR in Chad to provide displaced families a safe place to call home.

In May 2024, we visited the OuaddaĂŻ province to implement 3,000 Refugee Housing Units with generous support from the IKEA Foundation. Working with UNHCR, we explored ways to make the RHUs more durable and better suited to the community’s needs.

In the second phase, we collaborated with IOM Chad in Sila province, donating 144 RHUs and solar-powered systems. We trained the team on assembly and worked with the local community to improve two RHUs by adding jute mats for the walls and metal sheets for the roofs.

Together with our partners and the local community, we not only provided shelter but also empowered people to take part in rebuilding their lives and futures.
