According to figures from the Italian Ministry of Interior, 119 310 refugees arrived in Italy in 2017 by crossing the Mediterranean Sea, with a majority originating from Tunisia, Eritrea, Sudan, Nigeria and Pakistan. The rise of migration from Tunisia was an unexpected consequence of the 2011 revolution. Economic and political instability in Tunisia is still largely unresolved in some regions, and has even worsened in some.

The Italian Red Cross installed 230 Better Shelter Relief Housing Units (RHUs) in refugee transit centres in 5 cities across the country: Rome, Settimo Torinese, Lecce and Bresso. The units were used as temporary shelters for the arriving migrants and refugees.
