In August 2017, a new migration route along the Adriatic sea opened as an influx of migrants and refugees made their journeys through Montenegro towards Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina . The number of asylum requests grew along with the number of migrant arrivals in Montenegro.

UNHCR Montenegro donated 4 Better Shelter Relief Housing Units (RHUs) to the Ministry of the Interior of Montenegro. The shelters were set up at a reception centre in Spuž and offered an additional 32 accommodation shelters for asylum seekers.
