In 2018, it was estimated that Kyrgyzstan hosted 991 refugees, with most having fled from Afghanistan to escape conflict and instability.

As part of its operations in the country and in Central Asia, UNHCR ordered 132 Better Shelter Relief Housing Units (RHUs) to be stored in their regional humanitarian depot in Bishkek as contingency stock for responses in the region.
