Back to school in Northwest Syria
The humanitarian crisis in northwest Syria remains dire. The conflict, worsened by the devastating earthquakes that struck Türkiye and northwest Syria in February 2023, has displaced over 6.6 million people across the region. Communities affected by this dual tragedy face immense challenges, including limited access to necessities, healthcare, and education.
To support these communities, we partnered with Save the Children and local NGOs to help people rebuild their lives. In collaboration with Bonyan and ATAA, Save the Children launched a project to create safe and dignified spaces for vital humanitarian activities, such as education, child protection, psychological support, and healthcare. A key milestone of the project was installing 204 Relief Housing Units (RHUs), offering much-needed stability and hope to those in need.
“I love studying but couldn’t continue because of the war and earthquakes.”
Marah, a student in the school
Marah, a 12-year-old girl, lives in a camp in northwest Syria with her mother and siblings. After the earthquakes, she couldn’t go to school, which significantly impacted her life. With our RHUs now serving as schools, Marah has been able to return to school, receive psychosocial assistance and build a better future for herself.
“The school is great; we have a garden to play in, and our teacher often joins us. Things are better now because I can study and be with my friends.”
