Providing Shelter and Hope: Better Shelter and WATAN’s response to the Syria earthquake

On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake struck Syria, forcing thousands of families to leave their homes and those in urgent need of shelter. The areas most damaged in Idlib and Aleppo had a lot of destruction, worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis. In response, Better Shelter collaborated with Watan Foundation and other humanitarian organisations to provide emergency shelters for affected families.
Together, we delivered 200 Rapid Housing Units (RHUs) in two key locations in Idlib—Qah, Al Hurra with 105 RHUs and Burdaqly, Al Marj with 130 RHUs.
WATAN teams carefully conducted assessments to identify the areas that needed help the most. They also worked with local authorities to ensure a smooth setup. The shelters arrived in March, were quickly transported, and installed by skilled teams, thanks to UNHCR’s support.
A safe place to call home
Once installed, the families happily moved into the shelters. Each unit provided safety, dignity, and hope after the disaster.
“Praise be to Allah that He protected me, my family, and we all arrived here safely and in good health together.”
Mohamad al-Ali

Mohamad and his children lived in eastern Saraqib, where they lived with extended family members. They were forced to flee to Idlib in the North West, where Watan Foundation continue to provide thousands with humanitarian assistance, including shelter. While grateful that he and his family are safe, he hopes that they will return to their home in Saraqib one day.

“I hope to return to my village, my homeland, my land, and my home in safety and peace.”
