UNHCR has provided life-saving support to internally displaced people (IDPs) in Afghanistan for decades. In 2018, they estimated 370,000 new conflict-displaced IDPs and 435,000 new persons were displaced by drought and other natural disasters.

To support the IDP population in Afghanistan, UNHCR implemented 289 Relief Housing Units (RHUs) in 14 regions, which has so far sheltered 175,450 people. Among many functions, the RHUs were made into classrooms, community centres and health clinics.
