Following its independence from Sudan in 2011, South Sudan has struggled with a civil war since 2013. The violence killed thousands of people and displaced more than 1 million South Sudanese residents. Many of these South Sudanese residents sought safety in neighbouring countries such as Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the Central African Republic (CAR).

In February 2016, MSF implemented 18 Better Shelter Relief Housing Units (RHU) in support of their humanitarian operations in Wau Shilluk, Upper Nile State, South Sudan. MSF used the RHUs as primary health care clinics to attend to the wounded and provide healthcare relief to vulnerable communities.
