Better Shelter and H&M Foundation partner to provide housing for earthquake victims in Türkiye

We have partnered with the H&M Foundation to aid those affected by the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye. Through this collaboration, we aim to provide much-needed housing, and a generous donation of USD 100,000 from the H&M Foundation will support this.

The earthquakes

In February 2023, southeastern Türkiye and northwestern Syria experienced a series of powerful earthquakes, which killed over 55,000 people and left more than 100,000 injured. The earthquakes caused extensive damage to infrastructure, with over 230,000 buildings affected and three million people, including many Syrian refugees, losing their homes in Türkiye. Despite ongoing reconstruction efforts, around 600,000 individuals still lack permanent housing.

Our role

Thanks to the H&M Foundation’s donation, we, in cooperation with the United Nations Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Turkish Disaster and Preparedness Agency (AFAD), will construct 70 temporary homes, which will accommodate approximately 350 people in Hatay, one of the regions hardest hit by the earthquakes.

The construction is set to take place during the summer of 2024.

A better shelter against the outside world

Our modular shelters were designed to provide safe and dignified living spaces for those displaced by conflicts and disasters. These shelters have been used in over 80 countries, including Ukraine, Bangladesh, and Colombia. Shipped in flat packages, they can be assembled without tools in just a few hours. They feature a lockable door and a solar-powered light to ensure basic security and comfort.

The events heavily traumatised Many of the people who survived the earthquakes. Having a safe, albeit temporary, place to call home is a crucial factor in the recovery process.

Looking ahead

We are determined to provide safe and dignified living spaces for as many people as possible who have lost their homes, everything they own and their everyday lives.

This partnership marks a significant step forward in supporting the earthquake victims in Türkiye, and we remain committed to making a lasting impact and improving the lives of those displaced by conflicts and disasters.
