In order to increase sheltering capacity following the growing arrival of migrants and refugees in the Balkan region, UNHCR and the Red Cross built 96 Better Shelter Relief Housing Units (RHU) in North Macedonia in August 2015.
The shelters served as transit areas in Gevgelija in the south, near the Greek border, and in Tabanovce in the north, where the country borders Serbia. Many of the shelters host primary care clinics, and with the support of UNICEF, others have been equipped especially for children.
