Supporting national partners in Brazil to implement health care and protection programme against COVID-19
UNHCR is involved in Operation Welcome (Operaçao Acolhida) in Brazil’s northern state of Roraima, coordinating operations for the influx of Venezuelan migrants entering the country. UNHCR supported the construction of the Protection and Care Area (APC) which Operation Welcome Task Force has developed to support the state of Roraima to respond to COVID-19 cases.
With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, UNHCR donated 200 Relief Housing Units (RHUs), in addition to mattresses and hygiene kits for a new health facility, called Protection and Care Area (APC), in the Roraima state. The facility has a capacity for 1200 patients affected with COVID-19.

UNHCR is supporting the construction of the Protection and Care Area (APC) that Operation Welcome Task Force, the federal response to the influx of Venezuelans in Brazil, is developing to support the state of Roraima with possible suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19. APC will be a health facility to increase response capability amongst refugees, migrants and host communities. With capacity to extend according to the needs, 1,200 people can be initially attended in the clinic area for infected people. With technical expertise in assembling shelters and providing speedy emergency response in the field, UNHCR has supported the APC project with the help of architect colleague working on the design of the space. Up to now, UNHCR has donated 200 RHUs for the protection areas of suspects and infected people. Additionally, around 1,00 mattresses hygiene kits and blankets were delivered to the APC installations. While demand will likely increase, more items will be required to support the response.
