Supporting flood victims in Kenya

In 2023, severe flooding from the Tana River in Kenya displaced more than 136,000 people, affecting over 27,000 households. In response, we collaborated with the organisation Habitat for Humanity to launch a pilot shelter program. With support from the county government, Habitat for Humanity has provided 5,000 allotment letters, granting families legal rights to occupy safer highland areas, ensuring their security and resettlement.

Additionally, we tested various roof and wall materials on 15 Better Shelter RHU structures, incorporating traditional local materials such as galvanised roofing sheets, rammed earth, and unburnt bricks to make the shelters safe, durable and comfortable to live in. These homes provide warmth and protection from harsh weather, offering a stable place to live and build resilience.

We are now looking to expand this shelter program to support more families.
