Testing our shelters in India – an update

We work closely with our partners to continuously improve our shelters and adapt to the rapidly changing humanitarian landscape.

In collaboration with our partners, STS Global and SEEDS, our product team travelled to India for the third time in the past year to evaluate shelter performance.

In collaboration with experts from Seeds and STS, we conducted different tests at the site and deployed several loggers to record performance over time. We also replaced some current shelters with new versions for further evaluation and development. We examined various aspects, including ease of assembly, performance, thermal comfort, safety and dignity, permeability, local adaptations, and local materials and techniques.

Each week, experts from Seeds work with local teams to check the data loggers installed in the different types of shelters. They continue to change their positioning and record information, which helps us understand how different components impact conditions inside.

For example, we look at how adding a shade net outside a shelter decreases indoor temperatures by blocking direct sunlight, the temperature differences between fully closed shelters and with openings, and how passive ventilation inlets influence indoor temperatures.
