In 2015, Serbia saw an unprecedented number of refugees arriving in the country from Syria, most with the intention of continuing their journey to reach Western Europe.

UNHCR provided operational support to the Serbian Government by coordinating the registration process for refugees, counselling on asylum procedures and family reunification. UNHCR also provided shelter, medical support and other basic necessities for refugees in various sites across the country.

Most of the 200 Better Shelter Relief Housing Units (RHUs) implemented by UNHCR in Serbia were used as temporary shelters for accommodation.
