Strengthening the shelter response as displaced populations grow in Cameroon
By 2021, Cameroon was host to nearly 2 million persons of concern, encompassing over 450,000 refugees and over 1 million internally displaced people. In the far north of Cameroon, some 300,000 people had been displaced to seek safety from armed violence, and continue to face the dire risk of extreme hunger and malnutrition. In the northern Mirawao camp alone, some 60,000 displaced people have settled after uprooting their lives, with a growing population far exceeding the camp’s original planned capacity of just 10,000 people.
With growing displacements and heightened security risks to the civilian population in the far north, UNHCR provided 75 RHUs for 75 people with specific needs.
